User Research

Maybe you know that you need to conduct a usability study, you feel like you don't really know your users, or you feel like something is "off" but don't know what it is. Having conducted research "on the ground" for over 10 years, I will help empower you with data and understanding to make important decisions.

Yay Miro! This diagram depicts research categories and my most-used methods.

Discovery Research

I focus on understanding exactly what your users need, how they behave, and what motivates them. By conducting discovery research at the start, I'll gather key insights that will steer your product development in the right direction. This early groundwork ensures we're building something that truly resonates with your users and meets their needs effectively.

Some of my most-used methods:

  • Competitor analyses

  • Literature reviews

  • Secondary research

  • Interviews

  • Ethnography

  • Contextual inquiry

  • Task analysis

Generative Research

My role in generative research is to facilitate ideas for new products, features, or improvements. This type of research is all about uncovering innovation opportunities and conveying understanding of your users' world. It's about thinking outside the box to ensure your product meets and anticipates user needs, keeping you ahead of the curve.

Some of my most-used methods:

  • Concept tests

  • Diary studies

  • Card sorting

Evaluative Research

In evaluative research, I rigorously test and assess how well your design, product, or service works for your users. Conducted later in the development process, this research is crucial for validating and fine-tuning your prototypes. It's all about making sure your product is holistically usable, accessible, intuitive, and satisfying.

Some of my most-used methods:

  • Usability tests

  • Heuristic analysis

  • Expert analysis

  • Tree testing

  • Click-path and first-click testing (etc.)

  • Playtesting (video games)

Continuous Research

I design continuous research to ensure your product stays relevant and competitive even after launch. Through ongoing monitoring and maintenance, I'll keep a pulse on user feedback and data trends. This process is key to continuously improving your product, adapting to changing user needs and market dynamics, and keeping your users consistently engaged and satisfied.

Examples include:

  • Surveys

  • Site or product analytics

  • Heatmaps

  • Customer service logs

  • Customer/user feedback forms

Strategic Consulting

If you're here, chances are you already know how important it is to know who you're developing for and check how you're doing along the way. There are a few different ways that I can help you reach your goals.

Research Consulting

This is one of the biggest payoffs for your product. After a discovery call, I will help you figure out your research needs and how to approach them.

For example:

  • Plan what questions to ask, when to ask them, and how to answer them.

  • Estimate the risks and benefits of different research strategies.

  • Connect research to business, product, and organization-level goals.

  • Generate a research roadmap that aligns with, leads, or informs your product roadmap.

Workshop Facilitation

What do you do after you conduct research? How do you turn those insights or ideas into actions? How do you make sure your team is aligned, prioritizing the right things, and staying on track?

I can help you facilitate:

  • Workshops

  • Brainstorming sessions

  • Alignment sessions

  • Prioritization sessions

Communication

Talks & Subject Matter Expertise

As a former educator, I'm right at home in front of an audience (or even just you!). I've been a guest on podcasts, a keynote conference speaker, a guest lecturer, a motivational speaker, panelist, and many other roles that call upon my experiences.

Workshops

Maybe you'd like someone to lead your team through an interactive learning session about cognitive biases in design, or work with your department to collaboratively revisit your communication guidelines. I've been facilitating and moderating group sessions for more than 10 years!

Diagrams

One of the best ways to figure out what needs work is to diagram it. As an expert in information architecture and cognitive hierarchical analyses, I can help you visualize the path to clarity.
