Friends of Aphasia

Graphic Designer, Freelance

TL;DR

Fabi reached out to me about redesigning FoA's Instagram designs. Drawing on my cognitive psychology and neuroscience background, I addressed issues with accessibility for clients with aphasia. The redesign led to a 50% increase in likes and a 40% increase in comments, dramatically improving user engagement and comprehension and sparking further enhancements in the organization's approach to digital communication. Afterward, I created an accessible promotional slide for the movie "Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down."

Situation

Fabi, the CEO of Friends of Aphasia, identified a problem with the company's weekly Instagram posts—they were not engaging enough and receiving little traffic. User feedback highlighted that the posts were not helpful. My expertise in cognitive psychology and neuroscience highlighted several likely issues: aphasiac clients struggled with the text size, font choice, capitalization, and color pairing in the posts.

Unfortunately I do not have the rights to share the “after” designs.

Task

My goal was to redesign the Instagram posts to improve engagement and comprehension among aphasiac clients. Additionally, Fabi asked me to design an informative slide for the movie "Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down," ensuring it was accessible and catered to the needs of the aphasiac audience.

Actions

  1. Information Gathering: I conducted a detailed usability analysis of the existing Instagram posts, examining the layout, font size, color scheme, and other visual elements. I also consulted recent literature on visual processing in aphasia to guide my approach to the redesign.
  2. Style Changes: Based on my research, I implemented the following elements into my designs:
    1. I chose larger sans-serif fonts, conventional capitalization, and accessible color contrasts.
    2. I simplified the words and structured the content to reduce ambiguity.
  3. Movie Slide: Afterward, I used best practices and aesthetics to design the "Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down" slide, incorporating all critical information in an easily digestible format.

Result

The redesigned Instagram posts saw a significant increase in engagement. Analytics showed a 50% increase in likes and a 40% increase in comments per post, indicating higher visibility and interaction. The feedback from aphasiac clients was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing that the posts were much easier to understand.

Outcomes

  1. As a result of this project, I developed a comprehensive set of UX guidelines tailored to audiences with cognitive-visual impairments. Friends of Aphasia adopted the guidelines for future use, which was a testament to their commitment to accessible communications and provided a solid foundation for future endeavors in the field.
  2. The design changes and movie slide improved user engagement and comprehension and solidified the organization's reputation as a leader in accessible communications. This reputation boost attracted the attention of potential partners and funders, who were impressed by their commitment to inclusivity and innovation.
  3. The accessible designs contributed to a measurable increase in follower retention and growth on the Instagram platform. Specifically, they saw a 20% increase in follower retention and a 15% increase in new followers, indicating a significant improvement in digital reach and impact.
